Sow Compassion, Reap Change

This October we are highlighting the broken state of our global food system in our campaign: Sow Compassion, Reap Change. Through this we are hoping to raise awareness of the unjust way that we view and treat our food. There is such a disconnect between how food is produced and what we choose to buy and consume from the supermarkets that we collectively waste more than one-fifth of all food produced for human consumption. More than 1.3 billion tonnes of good food every year – more than enough to feed the 733 million people around the world who go to bed each night hungry.

We believe that if we all, collectively, truly understood the value of food we could eradicate hunger.

How you can support our campaign to end hunger and food waste:

1. Consider making a financial pledge through our campaign page where every donation is doubled or sign up on our website to become a regular supporter – even £10 a month can make a difference.

 2. Become a Global Neighbour by signing up to receive our regular communications.

3. Organise your own fundraising event during the campaign. Fundrasing Resource

4. Consider your own consumption habits and the food journey of your purchases (and tell us on social media about these changes).

5. Write a letter to your MSP to ensure the right to food in enshrined in Scots Law. Lobbying Guide with letter template

Did you know that UK households account for 60% of food waste, with cafes and restaurants responsible for 28%, and retail 12%. However, there are things we can all do to reduce this in our homes, why not give some of these a try and let us know on social media:

– Plan out your meals so when in the supermarket you only buy fresh foods that you will need.

– Be flexible and substitute in ingredients that you may have in surplus.

– Cook meals in bulk and freeze leftovers to be enjoyed later – this not only reduces waste, but also saves time!

– Start composting any foods that can’t be eaten in your garden.

– Regularly clean out your fridge, ensuring that you are aware of all use-by dates.

Every donation will be doubled
