Dear Global Neighbour
While I am not one for making new year’s resolutions, I do believe that a new year provides a good opportunity to pause, reflect, and take stock while thinking on the year to come. There is a prayer, often attributed to the late Archbishop Oscar Romero, entitled A future not our own which resonates at this time of year, and in this time we currently find ourselves in. Some excerpts from this prayer:
It helps, now and then, to step back and take the long view.
This is what we are about. We plant the seeds that one day will grow. We water the seeds already planted, knowing that they hold future promise. We lay foundations that will need further development. We provide yeast that produces effects far beyond our capabilities.
We are prophets of a future not our own.
As a valued member of the Signpost family, I want you to know that you are part of something much bigger. Providing a young girl with reusable sanitary pads enables her to continue attending school, which in turn reduces the likelihood of her marrying or having children in her teenage years. This leads to improved health, significantly increases her earning potential and ability to provide for herself and her family; ensuring her future children receive an education. Although we may not easily see this fuller picture across time I wanted to thank you in earnest for, as the prayer says, providing the yeast and enabling these transformations to occur.
We are in the midst of the strangest of times with much uncertainty of our future, and yet I take heart in the freeing words above that connect the seemingly small things I do now into something much bigger to come. Family should be a safe space to talk about difficult issues, and so I would like to talk with you today if I may about leaving the gift of a legacy in your will to Signpost International. My message to you can be found in the leaflet attached below which illustrates the lasting impact and transformation that a legacy can have on the lives of the many people around the world whom we walk alongside. We are in this fight against poverty and injustice not just today, but for the long haul, and a legacy gift from you will ensure we are equipped to continue to do so for many years to come.
